The Yi Coimbatore Chapter under its Learning Platform went on its third Learning Experiential Visit of the year to Ooty & Coonoor on 13 & 14 October 2012. The two-day trip involved visits to the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, Needle Industries I Pvt Ltd, Radio Astronomy Centre, Coonoor Tea Trade Association, and also a refreshing trek in Coonoor.
The first day of the visit started off with a trip to the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC). It is one of the few institutions of its kind in the world where training is imparted to aspiring Staff Officers of all the three Services - Army, Navy and Air Force, as also selected officers of the paramilitary and civil services, and officers from other friendly countries. Col S K Dutta, Commandant, DSSC, welcomed and addressed the members on the functioning of the Staff College and the various practical methodologies used in training the student officers. The members were then taken around the campus for a visual learning experience.
The next visit was to the Needle Industries I Pvt Ltd which is into the manufacturing of hand sewing needles, knitting pins and other hard haberdashery products. Mr T A Devagnanam, Managing Director, Needle Industries I Pvt Ltd, took the members around the facility explaining the process involved in needle making and also gave a story on how over the years, the tiny company managed not only to survive, but to grow through its own resources into what it is today a prime global provider of hand sewing needles, knitting pins and allied products.
The delegation then proceeded to the Radio Astronomy Centre which is part of the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) of the well-known Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) which is funded by the Government of India through the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). Mr Krishna Kumar, Researcher, Radio Astronomy Centre explained about the functioning of the radio telescope and addressed on how RAC provides a stimulating environment for front-line research in radio astronomy and astrophysics with its excellent and highly qualified staff and international reputation.
Day two had the members geared up for a half-day nature trek in Coonoor which was led by Mr Zubin Contractor, Trek Enthusiast. The last leg of the visit had the members visiting the Coonoor Tea Trade Association to get an understanding of how the tea business works and how tea trading is done. Mr N Sriram, CEO, Contemporary Tea Auctioneers Pvt Ltd addressed the gathering on the different varieties of tea that is grown and how tea tasting is done. The visit ended with the members having a practical session of tea tasting.
About 30 members participated in the visit.
Yi Hyderabad Chapter organized a learning mission to Prayagh Nutri Products Pvt Ltd, Hyderabad & held an Interactive Session with Mr Vinod Lalwani, Executive Director of the company on 13 October 2012. Prayagh Nutri Products Pvt Ltd is one of the leading manufacturers in India of Confectionery, Coated Wafers, Moulded Chocolates and cough drops to milk-based lacto bonbons, Eclairs.
Mr Raghavendra, Production Head, Prayagh Nutri Products Pvt Ltd gave a walk-around guided tour of the plant where members got to see the manufacturing units and understand the modern State-of-the-Art plant & machinery - which has deployed modern technology available in the industry to deliver the best quality products to their Customers.
Mr Vinod Lalwani, Executive Director, Prayagh Nutri Products Pvt Ltd during his interaction with Yi Members briefed them about the company being contract manufacturers for M/s ITC LTD. (one of the fastest growing companies today in the field of Confectionery).
He informed members that the Products offered by Prayagh are ISI marked and they have attained ISO 9001:2008 certification by ensuring constant delivery of quality approved ranges in the market.

Yi Hyderabad chapter organized a visit to well renowned Aga Khan Academy & Interaction with Mr. John Puddefoot, Head of the Academy, The Aga Khan Academy on 'Nurturing Young Leaders' Mr. PUDDEFOOT holds Masters in Mathematics from Oxford University and has over 25 years of administrative and teaching experience at Eton College, a five-century old school
The objective of the mission was to understand the purpose of Aga Khan Academy which is providing world-class education for exceptional students with strong leadership potential
The visiting Yi Members were cordially welcomed by the Mr Srikanth & Mr Aharoan, Head- Admissions which was later followed by an interactive session with Mr. John Puddefoot, Head of the Academy on "Nurturing Young Leaders". Mr. John Puddefoot, Head of the Academy gave a presentation on the history of Aga Khan Academy and briefed about the success journey. He also informed members that it is not for profit school and a self sustainable model which operated without reference to faith, origin, gender & caste.
During his interaction with Yi members he explained how the academy develops leadership qualities in students. Through the Academics' values it develops ethical leaders and fearless learners as well as exemplary citizens
Mr Aharoan, Head- Admissions, Aga Khan Academy briefed members about the admission procedures. He informed that the Admissions Committee evaluates candidates based on a range of measures and selects those demonstrating a high level of motivation and commitment to learning, a strong sense of integrity, and respect for others from diverse backgrounds
After the interaction Mr Amish Kadakia, Chair, Young Indian (Hyderabad Chapter) donated a set of high standard books to the library. These books are being forwarded by CII-Asia Foundation Mr Srikanth & Mr Aharoan gave a walk around guided tour of the campus where members got to see the best practices in facility design which were are intended to allow students to progress physically as well as intellectually and, in the process, build self-confidence, self-esteem and self-reliance. Students at the Academy participate in regular competitive sporting activities and other outdoor pursuits that help them stay fit while developing a strong sense of teamwork and a commitment to doing one's best in all areas.
Mr Aharoan shared a brief snapshot of the residential life at the Academy that complements and extends the academic experience and includes a rich array of activities and leadership opportunities to enhance students' learning and growth. He also explained that the Dorm Parents are carefully chosen group of teachers who live in faculty apartments in the residences - ensure a safe, nurturing and fun-filled environment for students. Yi (Hyderabad chapter) organised a learning mission to Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages P Ltd on 01 June 2012.
The objective of this mission was to provide a learning platform to Yi members and help them to understand the best Practices adopted by Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages P Ltd and how this company has successfully managed to evolve business excellence models in all these years. The visiting Yi Members were cordially welcomed by the Coca-Cola team which was later followed by an interactive session with senior management which helped mission members to understand the operations of Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages P Ltd in Andhra Pradesh. Mr Y Rama Rao, Team Leader-Operation, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages P Ltd gave a presentation on the history of Coca-Cola and briefed about the success journey. He also informed members how Coca-Cola acquired No.1 position in sparkling beverages, juice & juice drinks, and retail package water and have 23 consecutive quarters of growths.
Mr. M Pardha Saradhi, Head Public Affairs & Corporate Communication, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages P Ltd briefed members that Coca-Cola in India ventured with the mission to refresh the world, inspire moments of optimism and happiness, to create value and to make a difference. Coca-Cola directly employs over 25,000 people including those on contract and has created indirect employment for more than 1,50,000 people in related industries through its vast procurement, supply and distribution system. He informed that Coca-cola has 57 bottling plants in Indian which is owned by company as well as franchisees.
Mr Rao & Mr. Pardha Saradhi gave a walk around guided tour of the facility where members got to see the large water purifying plant, cleaning & detection of old/defected bottles, packaging & transportation.
Mr Ram Krishna Hegde, Quality & CA Manager, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages P Ltd during the interaction with Yi members explained how Coca-Cola Company introduced PlantBottle packaging, the first PET plastic bottle made partially from plants that is also a completely recyclable bottle. PlantBottle packaging reduces our dependence on a nonrenewable resource -- petroleum -- and reduces potential carbon dioxide emissions from the PET plastic bottles.
Mr Manish Maloo, General Head- Finance, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages P Ltd shared a brief snapshot of the overall revenue models of Coca-Cola and its charitable work involving Society and nation at large. 16 Yi members participated in this successful mission.
The Yi Coimbatore Chapter under its Learning Platform went on an Experiential Visit to Kochi on 18 - 19 May 2012. The trip involved visits to MOSC Medical College Hospital, Kolencherry, JJ Confectionary, Pete's Automotive Products, Baby Marine International, CGH Earth Group and Sailing in Panangad. The first day of the visit started of with a trip to MOSC Medical College Hospital, Kolencherry. It was an initiation by the local people that brought about the existence of the Hospital and it is run on charity basis. The Hospital still boasts of having the best Neonatal Care in India and state of the art Cardiology department. Members interacted with Mr Joy P Jacob, CEO & Secretary, Syrian Trust Hospital. The next place of visit was JJ Confectionary, a food processing plant that manufactures candies for Lotte and Parle. It was a wonderful experience for the members walking amongst the huge machines that magically spit out candies, breathing in the different flavours. The visit truly brought out the child in all.
The delegation then proceeded to Hotel International for a sumptuous lunch and Interaction with Mr Peter K Chacko, Managing Director, Pete's Automotive Products. Members got information on performance enhancers and modifications that can be made on cars to derive their full efficiency. In the evening we had an Interaction with Mr John Blogg, International Retail Consultant on International & Retail Development across the World in Consumer Goods. The second day started with a visit to Baby Marine International, who deal with exporting of sea food at an International level. The visit involved a tour of their packaging plant. This was followed by an interactive session with Mr Jose Dominic, Managing Director, CGH Earth Group. It was amazing to learn how keeping it simple, giving respect to nature and community in a place can be a huge success mantra in the Hotel business. The visit ended with a sail in the Backwaters at Panangad. 18 Members from Yi (Coimbatore chapter) experienced Kochi during this visit.

Yi (Ludhiana Chapter) organised the Plant Visit for the students of Deaf Cricket Federation to Akal Spring Limited, Ludhiana. Around 20 students from Deaf Cricket Federation visited the plant
The objective of the visit is to give students an exposure to different processes that has been followed in different departments, and also explore employment opportunities for them. Students had experienced the care and attention that goes into manufacturing every single laminated leaf spring
